All over the city you can see signs like this advertising "Kazakhstan 2030." It is a program begun by President Nazarbaev to promote economic growth. Of course, more cynical city dwellers (including many of my Kazakh friends!) grumble that Nazarbaev purposely chose a date far off in the distance so as to not have to live up to his promises.
