Here, my parents and are enjoying a home-cooked meal with my neighbors (who also happen to be my landlady and my former host family). My host family doesn't speak any English and my parents don't speak any Russian, but somehow it was a very merry event! Above, you can see the classic Kazakh dish, beshparmak, which my host family cooked for my parents. Traditionally, the dish is made with horsemeat, but this version is made with lamb. The noodles, which are made entirely from scratch, are covered with sauteed onions, meat and spices.
