Photos from Samarkand, which was the last stop on our Uzbekistan tour. Alas, my parents and I didn't have much time to see the city, but we did get a chance to see two of the city's major sites: Shahr-i-Zindah, a complex of tombs, which is rumored to contain the grave of Quzam ibn-Abas, who was a cousin of the Prophet Muhammed (the domes of the tombs are pictured above) and, below, the Registan, which is one of the most well known sites in all of Central Asia (pictured below). In medieval times, the Registan was Samarkand's commercial center. Samarkand itself, however, is one of Central Asia's oldest cities--it is rumored to have been founded in the 5th century BC!
