Happy Men's Day! This Friday, the 23rd, was "Day of the Defenders of the Fatherland," a kind of unofficial holiday honoring men. The holiday, which dates from Soviet times, is still celebrated in many parts of the former Soviet Union (as is "International Women's Day," which is March 8th). The above poster, which I noticed at my local supermarket, reads: "The 23rd of February! Celebrate in an manly way! On this day everything is for you! Men are at the center of women's attention!" In similiar "manly" fashion, my gym sponsored a weight lifting contest for men to honor the holiday.
