Above and below are photos from a recent day hike with some grad student friends into the mountains around Almaty. My friends Anna and Robert are standing in what is called a "zhailay," or a summer pasture for nomads and their herds. Alas, we didn't see any yurts, but we did come quite close to wild horses!
